For the correct development of growing feet, there are a number of factors to be aware of:

  • Shoes should fit in width as well as length
  • Shoes should give gentle support without restraining the feet
  • The soles should be flexible and stable
  • There must be enough room for healthy growth and development, as well as provide protection
  • Socks are needed to prevent chaffing and to absorb perspiration
  • Natural fibres are best to keep feet warm and dry
  • Avoid socks with heavy or bulky seams

Baby’s feet are soft, delicate and easily damaged. Not just in those first unsteady steps, but every stride in growing up.

All babies learn to walk when they are ready. Leave the purchase of first walker shoes for as long as possible. This allows tiny feet and toes to exercise without constraint. Your baby will feel more confident when taking those first steps if the surface underfoot can be easily felt.

Fist shoes are only needed when your toddler begins to walk and venture where feet need protection, especially on rough and uneven surfaces. Shoes should help develop a confident walking action.

Growth spurts can occur at any time. Children often outgrow their shoes well before the shoes are worn out. Toddlers require new shoes every 2-3 months, infants every 3-4 months and children over 3 years of age, every 4-6 months. At about 5 years of age, the growth cycle slows down until early teenage years.
